WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Political leaders gathered to honor the life of former President Jimmy Carter during his state funeral at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday morning.
President Joe Biden, President-elect Donald Trump and former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama were all in attendance to honor the life of Carter who died on Dec. 29 at 100.
President-elect Trump, along with former Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama sat side by side during the ceremony. Obama and Trump we’re seen chatting before the start of the service.
President Biden delivered the eulogy, describing Carter’s enduring attribute as his “character.”
“Jimmy Carter’s friendship taught me, and through his life, taught me strength of character is more than title or the power we hold. It’s the strength to understand that everyone should be treated with dignity, respect,” Biden said.
Steven Ford, the son of former President Gerald Ford, read a eulogy written by Gerald Ford before he died in 2006. Carter and Ford became friends after Carter won the presidential election over Ford in 1976.
“Georgia wasn’t just on Jimmy’s mind, it was in his blood,” Ford wrote of Carter.
Vice President Kamala Harris as well as Vice President-elect JD Vance and former Vice Presidents Al Gore and Mike Pence were also in attendance. Trump and Pence shook hands as Trump walked to his seat ahead of the funeral.
Notably missing from the crowd was former first lady Michelle Obama. Former first ladies Melania Trump, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush were there to pay their respects.
Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justices Samuel Alito, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Ketanji Brown Jackson were also there.
Other world leaders gathered in the cathedral, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who announced his resignation earlier this week.
The funeral service included a special performance of “Imagine” by country stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.
