Jimmy Carter honored at state funeral

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Thursday is a National Day of Mourning to honor former president Jimmy Carter.

The nation mourned and honored President Jimmy Carter during his funeral in Washington. The event also celebrated his humility and service.

For the last time Carter left Washington, D.C., after his funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.

“Throughout his life, he showed us what it means to be a practitioner of good works,” said President Joe Biden.

President Joe Biden delivered the eulogy.   All living presidents were in attendance and seated together.

“Through it all he showed us how character and faith start with ourselves, and then flows to others,” said Biden.

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood were one of several musicians to perform.

Steven Ford, President Gerald Ford’s son, shared a message written by his father.

“Jimmy Carter’s legacy of peace and compassion will remain unique as it is. Timeless,” said Ford.

Carter’s family looked back at his legacy.

“My grandfather spent the entire time I’ve known him, helping those in need,” said Joshua Carter.

A motorcade drove Carter’s casket from the U.S. Capitol where he had lain in state for the public to pay their respect, to the airport to be flown back to Georgia for the final time.

Carter will be buried alongside his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, in the same town where they were born, lived most of their lives and died.
