WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Supporters of the Special Olympics are in Washington this week, urging lawmakers to continue funding programs that support thousands of athletes with special needs across the country.

Advocates, including teachers and coaches, are meeting with members of Congress to highlight the impact of Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools, which bring students with and without disabilities together to play sports.

“The Special Olympics is more than just an event,” said Kayla Kuczynski of Special Olympics Michigan.

Kari Kossen, a Michigan high school physical education coach, said the funding helps provide equipment and uniforms for basketball and soccer programs, ensuring that all students can participate.

“I have a passion for these kids,” Kossen said. “I have a passion for them to feel a sense of belonging.”

According to Special Olympics data, 91% of participating schools report reduced bullying and increased attendance among students with intellectual disabilities.

Lawmakers from both parties have voiced support for the program.

“They’re so inspiring,” said Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) whose mother was a special education teacher. “This is an issue close to my heart, so I think it’s important to support them.”

Some Democrats worry that funding for special education programs could be at risk.

“We’re here to blow the whistle,” said Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.). “Every kid, regardless of disability, deserves an education.”

President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order this week aimed at cutting waste at the Department of Education.

The federal government funds about 10% of the Special Olympics’ annual budget, with the money going toward public school programs rather than the games themselves.

Trump’s budget proposals for 2018 through 2020 did not include funding for the Special Olympics.
