WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Republican lawmakers are meeting with President Donald Trump Thursday trying to get on the same page to keep the government open and cut spending.
Republicans have just over a month to avoid a government shutdown.
With slim majorities in the House and Senate, they’re also trying to deliver on President Trump’s priorities.
“We feel pretty solid about where we are,” Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.) said.
Republicans say they want to pass legislation addressing immigration, national security and tax cuts.
“The president is committed to working with Congress to get this done,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
However, Republicans in the Senate and House are divided on how they’ll get it done.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and other House Republicans are meeting with President Trump to address the differences.
“They’re talking about the budget and the priorities from this administration,” Leavitt said.
Before Congress takes action on those priorities, the Trump administration has already worked to trim the size of the federal government.
“I think that the American people want to have our government more accountable to what they’re spending,” Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R- W.Va.) said.
Democrats have sharply criticized the influence of Elon Musk.
“Every day Elon and his tech bros ride their skateboards over to a new agency and start crashing into their databases,” Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) said.
That includes USAID, which placed nearly all of its employees on leave.
“Enough is enough. Get out of our government,” Huffman said.
The Trump administration offered federal employees buyouts if they agree to resign by midnight Thursday.
The White House says 60,000 federal employees have already accepted, but a federal judge put the resignations on hold.
Leavitt says cutting the size of the government is one of the Trump administration’s priorities.
Musk says he’s aiming to save the taxpayers a billion dollars a day.
