WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — The Trump campaign is standing behind Melania Trump after the former first lady came out in support of abortion rights.
In her book and in a social media post, she framed the issue as an “essential right.”
Vice Presidential Candidate Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio.) says Melania “is entitled to her own views.” Vance says her stance does not change his view or the view of the campaign.
Eric Trump took a similar stance. Trump’s son calls abortion politics an “individual decision.”
Former President Donald Trump’s campaign platform says abortion rights should be up to voters in each state to decide. This week he promised not to sign a national abortion ban.
Leila Abolfazli, Director of National Abortion Strategy for the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund, says the Trump campaign is attempting to confuse voters ahead of the election.
“We are not fooled,” says Abolfazli. “We know his record we know he is responsible that we do not have a federal constitutional right to abortion.”
Trump’s opponent Vice President Kamala Harris is promising to codify protections under Roe v. Wade, allowing abortion access in every state.
Right now, 14 states have abortion bans. Voters in nine more states will consider ballot measures guaranteeing abortion access.
