Biden marks 235 judicial confirmations

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The president is touting his judicial confirmations as the most diverse group yet.

He appointed about a quarter of all active federal judges during his term.

“These judges will be independent, they’ll be fair, and they’ll be impartial,” said President Joe Biden.

President Biden appointed, and the Senate confirmed 235 judges to the federal bench, one more than President-elect Donald Trump in his first term.

“When I ran for president, I made a promise I’d have a bench that looks like America,” said Biden.

The confirmations include the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court and a record number of women, Black, Latino, and LGBTQ judges to lower courts.

The 235 judges mark the largest number of confirmations in a single term since the Carter administration.

Heritage Foundation Senior Legal Fellow Thomas Jipping says too much emphasis on race or gender of judges can hurt public perception of the judiciary.

“It injects a degree of ideology or politics into the law that I think is very dangerous,” said Jipping.

Jipping says the number of confirmations shows the power of a unified Senate and White House.

“Democrats demonstrated that a determined partnership between the President and the Senate and the Senate Judiciary Committee can accomplish a great deal,” Jipping added.

When President-elect Trump takes office, he’ll have an opportunity to appoint and have confirmed roughly 200 judges, assuming 40 to 50 vacancies a year.

Jipping says when combined with his first term that could be more than 430 appointments.
