Canadian couple skips yearly Myrtle Beach vacation over Trump tariff comments

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Two Canadian snowbirds recently decided they aren’t taking their two-month vacation to Myrtle Beach this year after President-elect Donald Trump said Tuesday he plans to put a 25% tariff on Canadian imports.

This would’ve been Dane and Sue Tremblay’s 15th year visiting Myrtle Beach and their first staying right on the beach. Dane says they lost money canceling their vacation because they already put down a deposit and paid for two months’ rent for a condo in Garden City.

Dane also says he and Sue — two retirees, have to shovel snow in New Brunswick, Canada, for two more months than they planned.

“The question is, will I ever go back? I don’t know,” Dane said.

A spokesperson at the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce on Thursday said the chamber is aware of the potential tariff’s effects on Canadian tourism in Myrtle Beach, but declined to comment at this time because Trump is not yet in office and the tariff is not official.

Dane says he and Sue agreed they needed to take a stand.

“It does not bode well for Myrtle Beach’s tourist economy,” Dane said. “You have Canada Days down there. There are a lot of Canadians who come, particularly for the winter. So, what’s that going to mean? It’s dollars out of your pocket.”

Canceling their trip was a very difficult decision, but Dane really hopes they’ll be back next year.

“Our heart is in Myrtle Beach. It’s been a good 15 years,” he said. “I’m hoping this all gets ironed out, good ideas will prevail, and we’ll go back to being good neighbors. But this is not being a good neighbor.”
