Gaetz and Vance meet with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Attorney General nominee Matt Gaetz is on Capitol Hill with Vice president-elect JD Vance. The two are meeting with senators attempting to solidify support for his shaky confirmation process. At the same time, the House Ethics committee is meeting to decide whether to release its report on allegations Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. He’s denied those allegations.

The House Ethics committee said it did not reach an agreement on releasing the report. On the other side of the Capitol, a fair number of Republican senators came out in support of Gaetz or at least push for him to go through the nomination process.

“My plan is to vote for all of the president’s nominees,” said Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.)

Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley met with Vance and Gaetz Wednesday.  He encouraged his colleagues to give Gaetz a chance to answer the allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use.

“He ought to have the chance to address that, to respond to that, in a public setting,” said Hawley.

Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing.

South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham told reporters he had a good meeting and will allow the process to go forward.

“I’m not going to legitimize the process to destroy the man because people don’t like his politics,” said Graham.

Some Republican senators say they have reservations about Gaetz.

North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis and Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville encourage senators to meet with him.

“Every member should meet with them regardless of whether they’re a no vote or a yes vote,” said Tillis.

Illinois Democrat Senator Dick Durbin says the information from the Ethics committee needs to be released.

“We need to have basic questions asked before we go forward with the nomination,” said Durbin.

Senate Democrats have also sent a request to the FBI for all material related to Gaetz.
