House Ethics committee releases report on Matt Gaetz

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The House Ethics committee released its report on former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz Monday morning.

The report accuses him of paying women for sex, including a 17-year-old, using illegal drugs and more.

The bipartisan House Ethics committee started investigating Gaetz in 2021.  The panel’s 37-page report says it found “substantial evidence” against him.

The committee alleges Gaetz paid tens of thousands of dollars to women, likely in connection to sex and/or drugs, between 2017 and 2020.

The report writes he, “violated House Rules and other standards of conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illicit drug use.”

The committee says Gaetz paid a 17-year-old after having sex at a party.  It also says he used cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana.

Gaetz denies all wrongdoing.

He posted on X last week, “It’s embarrassing, though not criminal, that I probably partied, womanized, drank and smoked more than I should have earlier in life.”

He filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to block the release of the report, calling it “defamatory.”

Gaetz also argued it should not be released since he’s no longer a congressman under the committee’s jurisdiction.

Some lawmakers, like Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, criticized the committee.

“If they’re going to be picking and choosing which reports they’re releasing, I think that’s extremely hypocritical,” said Greene.

This all comes after President-elect Donald Trump nominated Gaetz for attorney general.

Gaetz then resigned from Congress and withdrew his name for consideration when it became clear he wouldn’t have the votes to be confirmed.

“I wanted quite badly to be your next Attorney General, and to be nominated by President Trump for that position was indeed the honor of my professional life,” said Gaetz.

The Department of Justice did investigate Gaetz but never filed any charges against him.
