House panel releases interim report on Trump assassination attempt

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Inadequate planning, a narrow field of vision for local sniper teams, and fragmented lines of communication are just some of the key findings from an interim report looking into the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.

The 53-page report highlighted what it calls “stunning security failures” the Secret Service made during former President Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania in July.

It also revealed details of how the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to climb on top of the building and take a shot at the former president.

The report says law enforcement missed several opportunities to engage with Crooks. By the time the information reached the Secret Service command center, Crooks had been considered suspicious for nearly 40 minutes.

A final report from the bipartisan task force is due in December. It’s also investigating the second attempt on the former president’s life in Florida.

In a statement, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said “the task force will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that a security failure of this magnitude can never happen again.”

The White House says it is reviewing the report.

“Secret Service has all acknowledged their own shortcomings and they have taken several steps to enhance the former president’s protection,” Karinne Jean-Pierre, White House Press Secretary, said.

A spokesperson with the Secret Service said, “the Secret Service is also working with Congress to increase the agency’s resources so that we can make this paradigm shift a reality.”
