WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — House Republicans advanced their legislation Thursday to punish the world’s top war-crimes court after it issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The measure, which passed on a 243-140 vote, would block U.S. funding to the International Criminal Court and sanction people who investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute American citizens and officials from allied countries, including Israel. It now heads to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
“I do support it, and I think we’ll see that probably next week,” said U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.).
Schmitt plans to vote for the legislation, criticizing the court’s efforts.
“It’s a discredited organization that essentially has gone after Israel,” he said. “It’s an anti-American sort of effort so I think we should speak up in one voice on it.”
The court issued the arrest warrant in November, accusing Netanyahu of restricting humanitarian aid into Gaza and intentionally targeting civilians.
Senate Democrats have raised similar concerns about Israel’s war against Hamas and Netanyahu’s role, which is why many are likely to oppose the legislation.
However, when the arrest warrant came down, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Robert Wood condemned it, saying it could hurt negotiations to end the war.
“This decision does not make the pursuit of peace any easier,” Wood said.
President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump want a ceasefire and hostage release deal by Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.
The court also issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu’s former defense minister and Hamas’ military chief, who Israel claimed to have killed.
