WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Relief efforts are underway after Hurricane Helene devastated several states.
President Joe Biden said he’ll travel to the impacted areas, likely later this week, when his visit won’t distract recovery efforts.
There is widespread flooding, damaged homes and millions without power across the southeast.
“I’m here to tell every single survivor of these impacted areas that we will be there with you for as long as it takes,” said Biden.
President Biden said he’s directed all possible resources to the affected areas.
“Your nation has your back, and the Biden-Harris Administration will be there until the job is done,” said Biden.
So far, more than 100 people have been killed by the storm. The White House is bracing for a number that could be much higher.
“We know there are 600 who are either lost or unaccounted for,” said Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall.
Homeland Security advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall says thousands are working to rescue people, restore power and help survivors register for assistance.
“We send people door to door. FEMA literally goes knocking with an iPad in hand to help people register for the assistance they need,” said Sherwood-Randall.
Meanwhile former president Donald Trump toured storm damage in Valdosta, Georgia. He spoke in front of a furniture store destroyed by the storm.
“Here today to stand in complete solidarity with the people of Georgia,” said Trump.
Trump said he came with truckloads of supplies to hand out and thanked first responders.
“Throughout the region, our hearts are with you, and we are going to be with you as long as you need,” said Trump.
Vice President Kamala Harris cancelled campaign stops to travel to FEMA headquarters to be briefed on the hurricane’s impact.
