Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the rounds on Capitol Hill Thursday following his one-on-one with President Donald Trump at the White House.

Netanyahu met with congressional leaders from both parties after Democrats boycotted his previous visit.

“We had a good discussion about Israel security and about the imperative of the return of the rest of the hostages,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, (R-S.D.).

Netanyahu fielded questions following President Trump’s call to “take over” Gaza, forcibly relocate hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and develop the area into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”

When a reporter asked, “Mr. Netanyahu, do you think U.S. troops are needed in Gaza to make President Trump’s plan feasible?,” Netanyahu responded, “No.”

Democrats and Republicans alike called sending U.S. troops to Gaza a “nonstarter,” and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt walked back the president’s comments.

“The president has not committed to U.S. troops in the region,” Leavitt said.

During Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast, President Trump seemed skeptical of Hamas sticking to the hostage release deal his administration helped negotiate.

“We have more hostages to come, and we hope they live up to their word,” the president said. “And I have to say who knows if that’s going to happen.”

Netanyahu’s office said he stressed to lawmakers that Hamas has to be eliminated in Gaza, and Iran, the backer of Hamas, cannot obtain nuclear weapons.

Netanyahu was also scheduled to meet with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) Thursday, but Johnson’s meeting with Republicans at the White House over the nation’s budget ran later than expected.

President Trump is also facing the first impeachment attempt of his second term over his proposal to “take over” Gaza. U.S. Rep. Al Green, (D-Texas), introduced it and was also behind multiple impeachment efforts during President Trump’s first term.
