WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Democratic members of Congress were not allowed into the Department of Education Friday morning.
The lawmakers were blocked by a private security contractor who told them they needed to be on a guest list in order to enter the building.
On X Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) wrote, “They are blocking members of Congress from entering the Department of Education! Elon is allowed in and not the people? ILLEGAL.”
The lawmakers said the Department of Education is funded by taxpayer dollars and elected officials have the right to oversee operations.
President Donald Trump has said he would like to close the Department of Education using an executive order, but closing the department would require congressional action.
Democrats were also denied entry into the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday.
Congressional members vowed to keep pressure on the Trump administration.
