WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The Florida Panthers were the first professional championship team to be celebrated at the White House under the new Trump administration on Monday.
President Donald Trump hosted the team and commended them on an “unbelievable season.”
“You secured the Atlantic Division title for the third time and after coming up just short of the Stanley Cup the year prior, you gave the fans one of the most riveting comebacks in NHL history, in any sport history,” President Trump said.
The defending champions made history when they defeated the Edmonton Oilers in seven games to win the team’s first-ever Stanley Cup in June. The majority of the team showed up to the special ceremony sporting red ties.
Trump, who was also wearing a red tie, joked that he “loved the ties.”
President Trump was presented with two jerseys, a framed custom jersey with the numbers 45 and 47, as well as a jersey that read 47.
President Trump invited the team into the Oval Office for pictures following the event.
