WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The nation’s capital is gearing up for Monday’s presidential inauguration and major security efforts will start going into effect this weekend.
Fencing is already up around the Capitol and officials say they’re ready.
The inauguration is classified as a national security special event putting it on par with the Super Bowl in terms of how much security is needed.
“It’s an ever-changing threat environment. And so, we stay flexible,” said Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Matt McCool.
While the security plan is flexible, the fencing that’s already up is not.
“We’re hopeful that that’ll keep any of the protests from getting too close to the Capitol,” said U.S. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger.
Nearly thirty miles worth of anti-scale fencing will protect the Capitol and other key event sites around Washington.
“This All-Star team is working to keep everyone safe while minimizing disruptions to the public as much as possible,” said McCool.
Some road closures around Washington start this weekend and last through Tuesday morning.
The Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies will be out in force.
“We are 100% confident in the plan that we have put in place for this inauguration, that the public and our protectees will be safe,” said McCool.
On Monday, the airspace over the Capitol will close with agents also monitoring the air quality itself for any chemical or radioactive threats.
“It’s going to be an exciting day, but it is a day that there will be much security out there,” said Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.).
While officials say they’re planning for anything, one threat remains top of mind.
“The biggest threat I think for all of us remains the lone actor,” said Manger.
The city will also close several subway stations on Inauguration Day.
