Senate confirms budget director

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The Senate confirmed Russell Vought as the White House budget director. The vote came after Democrats held the Senate floor throughout the previous night. At the same time, Republican lawmakers are working with President Donald Trump to fund the government and avoid a shutdown.

The momentum has not slowed down in Washington, D.C., as lawmakers are juggling confirmations while trying to keep the government’s doors open.

Senate Republicans confirmed Vought to lead the Office of Budget and Management. Vought faced heavy Democrat pressure for his ties to Project 2025.

“He’s the wrong man for the wrong place with the wrong agenda,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer warns Vought will facilitate President Trump’s efforts to target funding already approved by Congress.

“Russell Vought will be a massive liability for Donald Trump, for Republicans. And worst of all, for the country,” said Schumer.

The work doesn’t stop there as Kash Patel, Tulsi Gabbard and RFK Jr. are still up for consideration for their positions and the possibility of a government shutdown draws closer.

“The president started off the meeting and sort of set the table for the discussion,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.).

Speaker Mike Johnson and other House Republicans met with President Trump to go over legislative priorities, like immigration, national security and tax cuts.

“The president is committed to working with Congress to get this done,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

The Trump administration is already at work trimming the size of the federal government. Democrats say Elon Musk is to blame for this.

“We only have one president at a time, and nobody voted for Elon Musk,” said Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.).

The White House says the president is committed to cutting down the size of the federal government and Elon Musk aims to cut down a billion dollars a day.
