Trump White House holds first press briefing, signals shift in media access

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — One week after taking office, the Trump administration held its first official press briefing Tuesday, marking a historic moment with the introduction of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.

At 27 years old, Leavitt is the youngest person to serve in the role. She opened the 47-minute briefing by declaring a new era for the administration.

“The golden age of America has most definitely begun,” Leavitt said.

The administration is making significant changes to press access. Leavitt announced that, under President Donald Trump’s directive, the White House will allow influencers and podcasters to apply for press credentials, broadening access beyond traditional media.

She also said the administration is restoring press passes to individuals they believe were unfairly denied under President Joe Biden.

“If you are producing legitimate news content, no matter the medium, you will be allowed to apply for press credentials,” Leavitt said.

In a break from tradition, Leavitt took the first questions from non-legacy media outlets, starting with Axios and Breitbart. While she called on mainstream press from the front row, she also fielded questions from outlets seated in the back of the briefing room.

Unlike many of her predecessors, Leavitt did not rely on a briefing binder while addressing key topics, including deportations, federal funding, and looming tariffs.

She did not specify how frequently she will hold press briefings but assured reporters that either she or the president will communicate with the public regularly.
